Leather Gear Care

Our leather is custom-tanned to handle tough, outdoor conditions. However, tough gear still deserves smart upkeep.

  • Brush off jobsite grit daily, and wipe down with a damp rag when things get muddy.
  • Occasionally shake out the debris from inside bags and pouches.
  • For deeper grime, use mild soap and water—no bleach, no harsh solvents. Then let it dry naturally.
  • For occasional cleaning maintenance—about once a year—use saddle soap, a leather cleaner, or mild soap and warm water. Then apply a small amount of non-oil-based leather conditioner. We recommend our Rugged Service Cream.
  • Store dry, out of direct sun, and your Occidental Leather gear will outlast the job.

* Avoid oil-based products, as they can weaken stitching and shorten the life of the leather.

* Always wipe off mud, concrete, or other drying compounds with a damp cloth before it dries, as these materials can draw out the leather’s natural oils

Hammer Sleeve (Good, not great)

This hammer sleeve is easy to attach to your bags. I wear the OxyLight adjust to fit and the hammer sleeve and nail puller sleev installed in under 10 minutes. The leather quality is on par for Occidental Leather, however, the inside of the sleeves is a rough grain leather. Is almost looks like fleece. I use a Stiletto 14oz TiBone hammer that has a rubber grip. If your hammer has a rubber grip, expect it to be a pain to slide it in and out. Not sure why they couldn't do the smooth tanned leather on the inside as well? I'm hopeful that over time this will wear in or out depending, and the hammer will slide in and out easier. Still thinking about options for the interim that won't make the hammer handle all greasy.

Hi, Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry to hear that the Hammer Sleeve is being pesky for you. The flesh side (interior) of the leather can be more or less grippy on these sleeves depending on the hide, and if your hammer has a rubber handle, that may make it feel snug at first. That’s normal—leather takes a little time to break in. Don't worry, with regular use, the friction from sliding the handle in and out will gradually burnish the leather, smoothing the texture and easing the draw. Next thing you know, it will fit like a glove and slide like butter.

Quick Tip: To help things along during the break-in period, try wrapping a bit of electrical tape around the butt of the handle—this can reduce friction and make the sleeve glide more easily until you get a nice burnish on it.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch with customer service at service@occidentalleather.com with any concerns about our products. We're happy help.

Works as advertised

I bought this about a month ago. Installation instructions were easy to follow. Adding it to my tool belt has been the best thing I’ve done. It makes it super convenient in the pouch.

So much more comfortable

I went back and forth for a long time if I should get this or not, then one day decided to pull the trigger on it and I love it. It took a couple weeks to get used to it and I still catch myself from time to time reaching behind my back to put my hammer away. But this style and method of hammer loop feels more natural and efficient, sure beets getting smack in the legs and other areas while working that’s for sure
