Leather Gear Care

Our leather is custom-tanned to handle tough, outdoor conditions. However, tough gear still deserves smart upkeep.

  • Brush off jobsite grit daily, and wipe down with a damp rag when things get muddy.
  • Occasionally shake out the debris from inside bags and pouches.
  • For deeper grime, use mild soap and water—no bleach, no harsh solvents. Then let it dry naturally.
  • For occasional cleaning maintenance—about once a year—use saddle soap, a leather cleaner, or mild soap and warm water. Then apply a small amount of non-oil-based leather conditioner. We recommend our Rugged Service Cream.
  • Store dry, out of direct sun, and your Occidental Leather gear will outlast the job.

* Avoid oil-based products, as they can weaken stitching and shorten the life of the leather.

* Always wipe off mud, concrete, or other drying compounds with a damp cloth before it dries, as these materials can draw out the leather’s natural oils

Framing Tool Belt Setup

Just finished my apprenticeship in Carpentry.
Bought the Left Handed Occidental Pro Framer in leather four years ago. It is the most comfortable and durable set of bags I've ever owned. And it took a couple of months of searching for a decent set of bags for left handed people.

I have had this exact set since 2019. I own dump trucks, a CAT 304 excavator, a new CAT 289 track loader, and many other items. Let me say that these tool bags are so well crafted, and so well thought out, that they are among the top 5 Items that I own period. My guys run my machines, they drive the trucks but they all know NOT to touch my Occidentals or to take a single tool out of my Klein bag. I have a picture of the first day I got them with my kids on my lap helping me open them. I take time to clean them out regularly while sitting on my family room floor with a large garbage bag to catch all the dust. I coat them in neatsfoot oil to keep them soft and protected. To say that they are an integral part of my everyday life is an understatement. On days where I'm trying to keep my men positive and motivated, when the customer has changed something for the third time, when it's pouring rain or blowing cold, these bags keep being what they are keep my work flow of cutting, measuring and chalk lining moving. The tape holder way up high out of the way, the speed square slot between the left two pouches, the tools on the right hip-they're perfect ! The tools that are in my bags have been there pretty much since day one. My speed square has a mirror polished spot where it rides between the two fastener pouches-that's how I know it's mine. Kudos to Occidental leather on building a far superior product. And the leather suspender system you can buy for them is TOP-NOTCH !!! Buy (4) stainless 1/4" carriage bolts, flat washers and ny-lock nuts. Drill them right through the belt where you like the strap bolt them down and smooth them off with a grinder. You then have one of THE MOST SOLID tools belts money can buy. I am a very passionate person. My work is precise, each of my tools/equipment are the best you can buy and I treat every customer like they are my brother or grandmother. Needless to say I would own NO OTHER tool belt than Occidental Leather. Thank you.

We're happy to hear how well the bags are working for you. Please keep in mind that oily dressings like neatsfoot oil will soften the leather, but could weaken it over time as the oils penetrate deep into the fibers. We recommend a leather lotion or cream such as our Rugged Service Cream, which will condition the leather without penetrating as far as the oil to avoid weakening the fibers. Also keep in mind that drilling holes for the bolts, as suggested, will void the warranty, but if it works for you, go for it. Thanks again!!
